Pay Raise of 5.2 Percent in 2024

In December of 2023, the White House signed an executive order to increase the average pay raise by 5.2 percent.

The executive order became effective on January 1, 2024, and implemented on the first biweekly payroll cycle (January 14, 2024).

This 5.2 percent increase is due to the White House’s fiscal 2024 budget that contributed 4.7 percent of the increase and a 0.5 percent locality pay increase (making the 5.2 percent increase the highest in over 40 years).

Compared to the pay raise in 2023, the federal pay raise was 4.6 percent with a fiscal budget contributing 4.1 percent and the locality pay increase contributing 0.5 percent.

This GS table is the general locality adjustments. As you may know, locality adjustments depend on where you live. To find a locality adjustment in your location, here is a helpful website: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2024/general-schedule

GS Grade and Step

As you may know, federal employee salary depends on the GS levels 1-15 and the steps 1-10. GS levels depend on the difficulty of your job and steps depend on how long you have been working well for the federal government. Changing jobs within the federal government should not decrease your step number.

Your personal GS level and step can be found within your standard form 50 (SF-50).

Salary Database

If you desire to look up your previous salaries or a friend’s previous salaries, here is a website that contains a database of these salaries: https://www.fedsdatacenter.com/federal-pay-rates/

The federal government has this database due to a tradition created in the early 1800s of being transparent with the public. This includes sharing who is working for the government and their salaries. But not all federal employees can be located on the database due to their job positions (including jobs that pertain to national security work).

Key Takeaway

The federal pay raise impacts all federal employees every year. It is important to adapt according to these changes.
